This is my uncle Stephan with his beloved draft horse, Bianca. It is a Winter scene from 1981 and black and white photos of the two are still available on the Dutch National Archives website.
He pioneered recycling and second-hand shops and became known as the 'schillenboer'. Peelings were collected and used as fodder. Children used to come running to the windows at the sound of the bells on his horse and ornamented carriage.
Inspired, I painted the memory over lockdown and sent it to him.
